Need a Tooth Extraction in Riverview?

TOOTH EXTRACTIONS

At Best Value Dentures and Implants, our two main priorities are to keep your smile healthy and to maintain your natural teeth. Sometimes, the only option left is to remove a problem tooth and replace it with a dental implant, or in the case of several teeth, a denture.

Dental extractions are performed to help eliminate the source of dental pain, and to prevent infection from spreading into the neighboring healthy teeth. Sometimes, removing a tooth is the best option our dentists can offer for your smile as a whole.

Common Reasons for Tooth Extractions

A tooth extraction is usually recommended only as a last resort or when you need full mouth rehabilitation. Best Value Dentures and Implants in Riverview, FL is dedicated to offering patients options for their oral health. Some of the most common reasons we perform tooth extractions include:

  • To make room for orthodontic appliances
  • Broken, cracked teeth that are non-restorable
  • Advanced tooth decay
  • Severe gum disease and bone loss
  • Upcoming tooth replacements such as dental implants or dentures

Wisdom Tooth Removal

If there is not enough space for wisdom teeth to erupt properly or they decay easily, your third molars might need to be removed. Sometimes wisdom teeth can be partially or fully impacted. If this happens, it often causes pain, swelling, and pressure on your adjacent teeth.

Because of their location in the mouth, it is hard to clean even fully erupted wisdom teeth. Our Riverview dentists see many cases of wisdom tooth decay and gum disease, even among people with good oral hygiene. We will recommend preemptive wisdom teeth extraction if we believe your third molars may be at risk for infection or they're causing you pain.

Recovering From a Tooth Extraction

A tooth extraction can be a straightforward procedure or a more complex surgery. Depending on your procedure, you might be able to return to work the same day as the tooth was removed or you may need to stay home for a few days to rest.

It is a good idea to keep a variety of soft foods and an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory, such as ibuprofen, on hand. Cool compresses on the sides of your mouth for 20 minutes at a time will help reduce inflammation, which is often the main source of discomfort after surgery. It’s also important to avoid smoking, drinking through straws, vigorous swishing, and carbonated drinks for at least a week or so.

If we need to place sutures on your extraction site for any reason, they will be either dissolvable or removed in our Riverview dental practice within a few days after your procedure.

Replacing an Extracted Tooth

While removing a tooth is important for preventing infection and improving oral health, the space left behind can lead to bite problems, shifting teeth, or TMJ complications. We will arrange for the replacement of the extracted tooth with a long-term option, such as a dental implant.
